Senior Communications
Course Summary
This course is designed for those students who intend to pursue business careers or for those students planning to enter a two year college upon their graduation from high school. Additional emphasis will be placed on the development of grammar, vocabulary, research, and writing skills. Students will also become more fully acquainted with the major types of business correspondence, group process formats, and business psychology techniques.
Overall Objective:
Students will gain a greater knowledge of the entire communication process, to include skills in: business writing, oratory, listening, research, negotiations, technologies, conflict management, career planning, etc. A program of regularly expanded vocabulary, a unit on library research, and a unit on speaking and listening skills and grammar study are included in this course.
FIRST TERM - "Self Directed" - Students will prepare documents that will assist them in preparing for college and/or employment. Documents will include resumes, cover letters, college essays, etc.
SECOND TERM - "Career Directed" - Students will develop career plans. Plans will be created by researching and participating in career selection instruments and by various writing assignments. Also, in this term you?ll be preparing a personal portfolio that will address many of your future concerns: home, budget, etc.
THIRD TERM - "Business Directed" - At this point in the year, students will have an idea what their career plan entails and will design a business plan to support it. All business plans will have a budget, marketing/sales goals, operational strategies and human resource initiatives.
FOURTH TERM - "Community Directed" - Students will be exposed to the issues of social responsibility. Current events will be logged and discussed. Social issues will be researched, debated and a ?position paper will be written. Also, a community project will be assigned.
